Meeting Enzo

Somewhere along the way Enzo came into our lives. This happens on the Camino, random characters popping up with large personalities. Too big for the confines of their own home or village, they either answer the call to meet others on the international trail or there strongly encouraged to go by their village to give the village a rest for a few months. Enzo is from a town not far from Venice in Italy, not the beach in California. In...

To the home of the Iberian pig

El Real de Jara to Monesterio Soon after leaving La Jara we came across the ruins of an old Roman castle. We are now officially on the ancient Roman road or “ Ruta Via De La Plata” . The Roman’s, Moors and Christian’s that travelled this path over thousands of years have left us a rich legacy (somewhat in ruins) of buildings, culture and food. Today would be a very short day of only 19 km with half of it...

A better day!

Castilblanco to Real de la Jara After waving a kymmy goodbye, wondering if we will see her again, we set off from Castilblanco De Los Arroyos. On the other hand what was different was that we were now off the flat plains and now rising into the higher plateaus that the majority of Spain sits on. An interesting fact is that Spain has the second highest average...

Then there was five !

Today was brutal with falls and withdrawals (hopefully temporary). We started out in the cool of the morning from Italica,, again with intentions of leaving at 0715 though dragging our sorry arses onto the saddle at 0745. Earlier research suggested that the traffic was elsewhere and the roads would be quiet. It would appear that Spanish motorist didn’t get that email! Coming to our first round about it was an off ramp from a freeway and it took some nervous...

First day riding

The big day arrives when we see if all the planning, pouring over maps, working out distances, back and forth emails to bikes Iberia can result in actual peddling.  We woke early and had all the things going into the panniers packed into some stripey bags bought in Goulburn before we’ve left. We had posted our packs and extra clothes to Santiago the previous day.  We took an Uber to the transport company that unfortunately was located about 10 km...

So where are we going you ask?

We are on our way, herding cats in Spain off to complete another Camino. We will be using bicycles (E BIKES of course) starting from Seville, in southern Spain and travelling through the remote Roman era Spain of Extramedura along the Ruta Via De La Plata to Santiago De Compostella.  The run on team for this years adventure is the past camino pilgrims; Pen, Sheryl, Grace ( Sheryl’s daughter), Kymmy and her brother-in-law Greg and myself.   Not one hard core...
